More Snake News from Chiweenie Acres!

This spring seems to be snake season here at Chiweenie Acres.

First it was a whackin' huge gopher snake. Then it was zippy black racer snake. This time it's a young snake - species unknown.

Auntie 'Lisa caught him for his photo shoot and then let him go in a safe place, away from us dogs. We would have LOVED to have played with him but our humans said that he wouldn't have wanted to play with us.

Does anybody recognize what kind of snake he is? He's NOT a worm even though he looks like one. He has EYES and a mouth.

Another Snake Finds a Home at Chiweenie Acres!

Another snake, either a racer or a king snake, has moved into Chiweenie Acres.
Figuero was discovered hanging out under the gigantic mulberry tree in the front yard.

He slithered away in a huff when all the humans made a big fuss over and him and started shooting at him with their cameras.

"If I'd known the Paparazzi lived here, I might have gone somewhere else!" he snapped before sliding gracefully through a hole in the fence to the back yard . . . where we Chiweenies spend a good part of our daytime hours.

Hmmm. Hope we're not gonna have a problem with him.

Gopher Snake Joins the Predators at Chiweenie Acres!

We have a new resident at Chiweenie Acres . . . Leslie, the Gopher Snake.

Armed with implements of destruction (hoes, shovels, axes, machetes, dynamite - just kidding - they only had a camera), our peeps went out to meet the new tenant.

He had just gorged himself on gophers or bunnies in the big field and had several telltale lumps along his length. He slithered into the hedge, only wanting to be left alone to digest his meal.

No rattles on his tail so that eliminated him as a threat to us. Using the photos, our peeps googled Snakes in Southern California and soon identified him as a Gopher Snake. He must be at least 5 feet long!

We don't mind sharing out field with Leslie but we hope he doesn't come in our big fenced yard. Moose is crazy enough as it is over the rodents that live out there. A 5 foot snake would send him over the edge!

Red Tail Hawks - 1, Doves - 0

We have a beautiful pair of red tail hawks that live at Chiweenie Acres. We also have dozens of nice plump doves living here. The hawks catch the doves and then sit in our trees to enjoy their meal. We end up with lots of feathers.

The Big Horned Chiweenie

Pepper played tourist at the Mount San Jacinto State Park recently. After a tour of the visitors' center, she indulged her mom by posing as a big horned sheep! Chiweenies are VERY patient little dogs.

OMD! One of our pack spent several hours hanging out at a micro-brew joint in Julian, California last Saturday. She had a small stout and passed out under the foozeball table.

Pepper Goes to the Desert

Last weekend I visited the Anza Borrego Desert to watch migrating hawks take off on the early morning thermals.

Since the hawks weren't very exciting, I explored the desert and found that there were many interesting smells.

Seems there are DOZENS of coyotes passing thru here, leaving their marks on every scrubby plant available.

Of course I had to leave my calling card for them to find the next time they went that way.

Chiweenies Under Seige

Coyotes!
We've heard them singing in the early evening when they leave their den to go hunting. It makes the hair on our backs stand up.
We've smelled their scent on the breeze. It makes us worried and confused. Are they dogs? Or what?
We've found their poop and pee on our driveway in the early morning. We "counter-marked" our territory by peeing on their markings.
This morning they crossed the line and invaded our territory IN BROAD DAYLIGHT!!!
At about 8 am, we spotted a coyote brazenly walking up the drive (just on the other side of the hedge in the photo) looking for a Chiweenie snack! Finding none of us available for fine dining with him, he cut down through the ground squirrel colony and drifted silently out of sight.

Up until today, we were willing to share our land with the natives. We used it during the day and they used it only after dark.
Now the enemy has violated this unspoken agreement and has come looking for us on our own time and turf.
The humans broke out the weapons and armed each of us to the teeth - guns, knives, gernades, flame throwers and bazookas.
We are ready to defend our home and property! We are the Sons (well, mostly Daughters) of Liberty!
We are prepared to fight to the last dog to protect Chiweenie Acres from this invasion.
We WILL stand firm! We WILL prevail!
(Now can someone please tell us how we're supposed to use these weapons when we have no opposable thumbs?)
